VRA Holds STEM Bootcamp and Career Guidance Programme at Anum SHS

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has organised a two-day Employee Volunteer Programme (EVP) at the Anum Presbyterian Senior High School in the Asuogyaman District, engaging more than 500 second-year students in career guidance and academic support.

The initiative, part of VRA’s community engagement strategy, combined a STEM bootcamp with career mentorship sessions. Staff volunteers facilitated lessons in core and elective subjects, including Science, Technology, Mathematics, English, Government, History, Physics, and Biology, while also linking classroom learning to real-world careers.

Mr. John Chobbah, Principal Information and Publicity Officer at VRA, explained that the programme sought to inspire students to make informed career choices. “Our goal is not necessarily to recruit for VRA, but to encourage students to excel in their chosen fields and contribute meaningfully to national development,” he said.

He highlighted that beyond its engineering operations, VRA employs professionals in diverse fields such as law, medicine, ICT, public relations, human resources, and finance, many of whom participated in the sessions.

Mr. Chobbah also urged students to stay focused and resilient, cautioning against distractions such as substance abuse and early sexual activity. “No matter the challenges, your choices determine your future. Stay determined and avoid distractions,” he advised.

Ms. Rhodha Enyonam Arthur, Principal of Community Relations at VRA, encouraged female students to aspire higher, pursue tertiary education, and not settle for early marriage. “Young girls must know that they can become leaders, professionals, and mothers. With discipline and hard work, you can achieve anything,” she said.

Students described the programme as inspiring and motivational. William Osei Bonsu, a second-year student, said the sessions improved his time management skills and helped him plan his career path. “I now know how to structure my studies and choose a course that aligns with my dream of becoming a scientist,” he added.

The EVP forms part of VRA’s wider youth empowerment efforts, aimed at promoting mentorship, education, and professional exposure across its operational communities.
