The programme dubbed 'Maakye"(Good Morning) hosted by Nana Boroo was very interesting when the phone-in segment took place.

The topic for the discussion was about the Agriculture policy "Planting for Food and Jobs" being spearheaded by the government from this year.

Some of the initiatives that was explained by the District Information Officer were; the call by the government for all Ghanaians to embark on both large scale and back yard Gardens to produce enough food for domestic use and for export, provision of farm inputs such as fertilizers, improved seeds, extension services and market for the farm produce.

On the cocoa industry the officer spoke about the improvement of the cocoa mass spraying by the government by involving the private sector, the training of the youth in artificial pollination and fertilizer application, the use of solar powered water pumps to irrigate cocoa farms and the rehabilitation of old cocoa farms; and the expected youth the policy and programmes will employ.

During the phone-in segment 25 people had the opportunity to call; none of the callers was against the policy; they all congratulated the government for the year's agriculture policy and promised to involve themselves in the implementation of the policy to get the necessary benefits.

However, some of the callers appealed to the government to provide the necessary inputs on time some of the callers said they have started preparing their lands since the rain has started; they called on government to expedite action to supply them with the needed inputs.

On the artificial pollination the youth who had the chance to call pledged to involve themselves in that training to boost cocoa production and to get job to do.

On mass spraying of cocoa the people called on the government to privatize the programme to ensure efficiency and effectiveness devoid of party politics.

The also urged the government to procure new spraying machines to facilitate effective mass spraying of cocoa in the country.

On availability of land the people called on the government and the district assemblies in Ghana as a matter of urgency to stop the illegal mining (galamsey) activities which are destroying arable fertile lands especially swampy areas which could be used to cultivate rice.

Finally the people used the programme to thank President Akuffo-Addo for raising the Member of Parliament for New Edubiase Constituency, Hon George Oduro to the level of a Deputy Agriculture Minister.
