ASANTE A N: DCE presents to 105 persons with disability

The Asante Akim North District Assembly in the Ashanti Region this year spent over 90 thousand cedis on the health, education and income support for 105 persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the district.

About 26,000 cedis was spent on medical bills for 22 persons, 13,000 on sponsorship of education at all levels for 29 members, and 54,000 on procurement of income generation items for 60 PWDs.

At a ceremony to distribute the items on Monday at Agogo, Mr Francis Oti Boateng, District Chief Executive (DCE) encouraged them that they could make a responsible living if they could identify, develop and utilize their talents instead of resulting to begging on streets.



He emphasized, that each one of them had a talent and the Assembly was prepared to resource them to be permanently self reliance and not to be given temporal daily meals.

He disclosed the plan of the Assembly to train them in soap making, honey and mushroom production, snail rearing, dressmaking among others as livelihood empowerment programs in order to resource all the 900 registered PWDs in batches.

This, he said, will attract expansion from the Assembly and banks after a planned monitoring and evaluation of the business when they take off.



Items distributed were block moulding machines, hair dryers, photo copier machines, sewing machines, wheel barrows, knitting machines, agro chemicals, grinding machines among others.

Mr. Thomas Owusu--Antwi the District Director of Social Welfare and Community Development Department urged them to trust the Assembly and wait patiently for their two percent allocation of the District Assembly's Common Fund (DACF) since it can never be diverted to any project than to be shared in batches, every quarter.



Mr Frank Gyamfi, Assemblyman for Juansa and Social Welfare Convener stressed the hope to increase the package in the near future for their well-being if they manage the current one profitably.

Mr Emmanuel Adama, leader of the District Federation of the Disabled thanked the Government and District for the gesture.
