KINTAMPO: Kawaku Takyi is Municipal best farmer for 2019

This year marks the 35th time the nation is acknowledging the tremendous role and impact of farmers to the nation’s development economically.

Kintampo Municipal Assembly drawing farmers, heads of departments and the general public to a gathering in Kunsu, a community within the Municipality to honor the municipal’s gallant farmers.

This year’s celebration was under the theme: “Enhancing Small Scale Agriculture Towards Agribusiness Development”.



As the host of the celebration, the chief was very thanked full to the leadership of the Municipality for honoring his community with hosting right to the event. He touted the tourist attractions in and around Kunsu and called for their development. He noted that a greater percentage of food that was brought to Kintampo market was from Kunsu and environs.
                                                         
Nana Osahene Kuaku Koranteng II also pledged support to the government flagship programme of planting for food and jobs with parcels of land. He also asked for a serious facelift of the road to Kunsu which he said was hampering economic activities.

The director of Agriculture Mr. Simon Yambor noted “we have gathered again as Ghanaians and stakeholders in agriculture to recognize our eminent farmers, fishers, and processors as always said,” the nation that does not honor its heroes is not worth dying for”. He indicated that farming was no longer to feed the stomach but viewed as a business and thus agribusiness.

“Agribusiness means seeing a farm as a company, rather than a place to grow food”, he said. He cautioned farmers to grow what the market wants and not what they want. Mr. Yambor commended government and donor agencies for their assistance in acquiring a pick-up vehicle and motorbikes for Agric Extension Agents as well as the employment of more staff.

He also “Agriculture holds the key for reducing rural poverty and gingering development in the country and Africa”.

He congratulated and acknowledged the efforts and contribution of his staff, private enterprise and the Member of Parliament for supporting and organizing the event.

The Municipal Chief Executive Mr. Michael Sarkodie Baffoe “this day is a special day set aside in recognition of the work of all the industrious farmers who for several years have provided sustainable food supply to all Ghanaians and also provided produce for the international market which earns the country the needed foreign exchange to support our development agenda”, he said.

Mr. Sarkodie revealed the Assembly taken delivery of new tractor and accessories as well as irrigation equipment as part of the mechanization of Agriculture in the Municipality.

He also talked of resurfacing of roads in the Kintampo Township and in communities as under the One Million, one constituency Fund.

He then presented the best farmer award to Mr. Kwaku Tekyi who went home with a motor-tricycle, Agric inputs and agrochemicals, with the runner-up Mr. Jacob Kutordzor, also had motorbike, inputs and agro-chemicals.

Other awards were also given such as Municipal best youth farmer, best female farmer, best farmer with disability, best Agric Extension Agent, best livestock farmer, and best promising farmer. Farmers who also brought farm products for exhibitions were also given some farm items to take home with.
