This year’s event was under the Theme: “Accelerating Agricultural Development, through Value Addition” which brought together all stakeholders including farmers, Assembly members, Heads of Departments, Nananom, Security and Media to grace the event.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Simon Yambor, who is the Municipal Director of Agriculture, noted that agriculture has become the heart of our economy and remains crucial in reducing rural poverty and enhancing development in various communities and the country as a whole.
He also added that, in order to contribute to consolidation of the food system in our country, a holistic approach has to be taken to address some threats to our food security.
He highlighted the distraction of farms and farm produce by Fulani herdsmen, rampant bushfires destroying farms and properties, and charcoal production as major challenges that the sector is currently facing.
He lauded the government for support through its flagship programmes and also giving out some 38, 000 mango and 20,000 Coconut seeding to farmers within the municipality to boost farming in the area.
He also seized the opportunity to appeal to the assembly to the government to assist the Agric department and create routes to various farms and market centres.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Kintampo North, Mr. Isaac Baffoe Ameyaw said the theme for this cerebration was to put emphasis on the need for value addition in agriculture and also present a very good opportunity for additional revenue generation, and also create more jobs for the youth.
The MCE stated, there was the need for profitability of farmers to empower the weaker sections of the society, to provide safe, quality, and branded foods to the customers, to reduce post-harvest losses, reduce import and increase value-added export and for all these encourage growth, reduce the risk of marketing, promote crops variation and increase the financial stability of farmers.
He concluded by calling on all to prevent and control bush fires especially during this harmattan season.
“Let us all try to be each other's keeper and save the municipality from spending sums of money on the operations of anti-bush fire squads each year”, he stated.
