Speaking in an interview with Ghanadistricts.com, the MCE revealed that these malpractices have over the years contributed significantly to financial shortfalls in the Assembly’s internally generated funds (IGF), hindering development projects in the municipality.
However, to help address the situation, Mr. Addo said a new taskforce was formed following his appointment and subsequent confirmation as MCE to monitor the activities of revenue collectors.
He noted that the initiative is already yielding results as market-day revenue collections have jumped significantly from GHs 4,000 to GHs 7,000.
“The IGF they got from the market through revenue collection before I came to office was 4,000gh. But when I came I put some measures in place and now on every market day we get 7,000gh”, the MCE revealed.
The taskforce, he noted, uncovered the issuance of three different types of tickets at various market centers, stressing that only one was identified to be officially recognized by the Assembly.
He noted that the taskforce has now been mandated to verify that all traders receive approved tickets and to account for the number of receipts issued daily.
Meanwhile, Mr. Addo disclosed that the Assembly is working to introduce a digital revenue collection system to minimize leakage and boost financial accountability.
