According to the District Chief Executive (DCE), Musah Abdul Rashid, the Assembly has identified two key communities; Wulensi and Nakpayili as pilot areas for dry-season vegetable farming using irrigation systems.

The initiative aims to boost local food production, create jobs, and increase exports of vegetables to both domestic and international markets.

Speaking in an interview with Ghanadistricts.com, the DCE explained that the project is part of broader interventions designed to improve the well-being of residents by promoting sustainable agricultural practices and empowering local farmers, especially women and youth.

To ensure the success of the program, the Assembly has deployed agricultural extension officers to provide technical support, modern farming advice, and training to farmers in the targeted communities.

The DCE further revealed that the Assembly is working to address post-harvest losses, a major challenge facing farmers in the area. Discussions are currently underway with the National Buffer Stock Company and Exim Bank to facilitate the construction of storage and processing facilities to preserve produce and stabilize market prices.

Additionally, the Assembly plans to improve feeder roads linking farmlands to markets, ensuring that farmers can transport their produce with ease and reduce spoilage.

"These Interventions are part of our long-term vision to make Nanumba South a model district for climate-smart agriculture and sustainable food systems,” the DCE said.

“We are not only creating employment opportunities but also ensuring food security and resilience against the impacts of climate change.”

The initiative reflects the Assembly’s commitment to transforming agriculture into a viable business for local communities, driving economic growth, and positioning Nanumba South as a leading producer of vegetables in Ghana.
