Vacant Kpandai Seat: NPP MP Akwasi Acquah warns against “careless abandon” of state institutions

Mr. Acquah said the recent notification to the Electoral Commission (EC) about the vacancy, despite pending court motions, sets a dangerous precedent for the country’s democratic framework.
The seat became vacant after the Tamale High Court annulled the December?2024 election results for Kpandai and ordered a fresh poll within 30 days?.
Parliament, however, moved quickly to inform the EC on December?4, initiating the administrative steps for a by-election?.
But the Akim Oda MP argued that the Speaker’s ruling was premature, noting that a stay-of-execution motion and a certiorari petition had already been filed and served on the Clerk to Parliament.
The NPP has rallied behind its embattled MP, Matthew Nyindam, with party officials declaring the party’s “solid rock” support and vowing to fight the decision in every court.
Meanwhile, the opposition NDC has accused the NPP of trying to snatch the seat through procedural shortcuts, warning that the move could undermine the integrity of Ghana’s electoral system.
As the Supreme Court prepares to hear Nyindam’s motions, the political temperature in the Northern Region remains high with both parties gearing up for what could be a fiercely contested by-election.
