"Census not for taxation" - MCE debunks

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Wenchi, Dr Prince Kwakye Afriyie has debunked notion that the 2021 Population and Housing Census is meant for taxation of the citizenry.

In a key note address delivered on his behalf, the Municipal Chief Executive explained that government needed evidence-based planning in all facets of decision making in development agenda hence Census will provide adequate data to help measure, monitor and estimate the extent of progress made on national the development agenda.

The data collected will guide to measure socio-economic status of the citizenry and improve resource targeting to areas that need them the most.

From 13th June Chalking/Listing begins to number and identify all structures in Enumeration Areas (EAs) in the Municipality. 27th June is Census Night where persons on transit and short stay, institutions such as hotels, guest houses and hospital in-patients will all be counted that night. The general enumeration takes off from 28th June to 11th July 2021.


The 2021 Population and Housing Census is unique in several aspects; it will be the first fully digital Census to be conducted in Ghana with the use of tablets and internet to capture and transfer the information. The use of geospatial information and Geographic Positioning System (GPS) coordinates of all structures.

The 2021 Population and Housing Census will also use of online comprehensive data quality assurance and real-time enumeration to ensure that every person and structure is counted.

Information will be collected on living conditions, water and sanitation, employment status, among others.

He urged all persons both Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians to cooperate with Census Officials by providing the necessary accurate and complete information to them for enumeration. He further urged political parties, religious groups, business community, private sector, civil society and the Media to use their various platforms to support the exercise.
