The Sekyere South District Assembly in the Ashanti Region has improved sanitation conditions in the district by evacuating major refuse dumps some of which were about a hundred years.
The MCE for the area, Edward Kusi Ayarkwa who disclosed this in an interview with Ghanadistricts.com observed that a lot of preventable diseases were recorded in most of the hospitals in the district over the years which were attributed to poor sanitation. Some of these diseases eventually resulted in lost of lives.
He indicated that for this reason, upon assumption of office, he commenced a project to evacuate all such refuse dumps in order to improve sanitation in the area.
“I came to meet filth, people lived in filth and others were dying,” he lamented.
He said not only were the dumping sites evacuated but inhabitants were also provided with refuse containers where waste collectors came for them when they were full up.
“Within three months since I started the project, I was able to evacuate most of these dumping sites,” he stated.
