Plans are far advanced for the completion of an ultra modern maternity block for the Asamankese government hospital in the West Akim Municipal Assembly of the Eastern Region.

The project which was started six years ago by the previous administration was halted due to lack of funds to complete it.

Construction work is ongoing with the project currently at the ceiling level with wiring of the building in progress.

Speaking to Ghandistricts.com, the West Akim Municipal Chief Executive, George Mensah Akpalu, stated that the assembly’s decision to complete the stalled project is ample evidence of the assembly’s commitment to ensuring the delivery of quality health care in the municipality.

He said the assembly has committed GHS80, 000 from the District Development Fund (DDF) to ensure the speedy completion on the project.

Hon. George Mensah Akpalu, noted that the absence of a maternity block at the hospital created a situation where the many pregnant women who visited the health facility did not receive the best of maternal care as is expected.

He expressed confidence that the completion of the maternity block and its subsequent operation will to a large extent ensure that maternal deaths in the municipality is curbed.
