The installed equipment are two normal high lift pumps, Wash water pumps, blowers, raw water pumps and a control panel.

The installation marks the first phase of a broader project that government through the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitations is embarking on to improve the supply of potable water to households and industries within the Sekondi – Takoradi Metropolis.

The said project is a 25 million Dollar contract between the Government and Intermic Ghana Limited to provide the Daboase Treatment Plant, the Inchaban Water Plants and Bosumase Water Station with new pumping equipment.

The project is expected to be completed within two months.

Speaking at a handing over ceremony the Deputy Regional Minister indicated the next phase of the project will be the installation of pumping equipment for the Inchaban Water Plants and the Bosumase Water Station to serve as a backup for the Daboase Treatment Plant.

The Daboase Water Treatment plant which is the primary source of potable water to Sekondi – Takoradi was designed to supply 6 million gallons of water a day.

It is however currently doing some four million gallons of water a day even at the peak of the rainy seasons.

The reason for the shortage in supply has been attributed to the activities of illegal mining on the Pra River, low river inflows, lack of regular maintenance and aging equipment.

According to Mrs. Gifty Kusi, she is optimistic that, when the works are completed water supply to the metropolis will significantly improve. “With the procurement of these pumping equipment at Daboase and Bosumase, it is expected that the supply of water will improve to 6 million and above and Inchaban will also rise from 2 million gallons of water a day to three million…”

Mr. Eric Johnson, the Managing Director of Intermic Ghana Limited, the company that installed the new pumps said, as part of efforts to ensure that the equipment runs the full course of their time there is a planned arrangement to send some engineers of Ghana Water Company to Germany for training.

“These equipment are designed to run for more than 20 years. However without the right engineers to service them there will be a problem. I am currently working on a maintenance contract with government to look at training some people at Ghana Water to help maintain them”.

He said: In the meantime our engineers will be doing the servicing for the next three years after which engineers from Ghana Water will take over. The idea is that by that time Ghana Water will have enough engineers to work on the machines”.

District Chief Executive for Wassa East, Hon Wilson Arthur, highlighted significant efforts the Akuffo Addo led government is making in resolving challenges in the energy sector and also on improving the water situation in Sekondi – Takoradi.

“Very soon the sector minister will be coming… to let the whole world know the good works the NPP government has done in this short time in office. We know the situation. The water situation in Sekondi – Takoradi is a major problem. I have personally experienced it. But with this installation and the planned installations at the other head works you are assured the challenge with water will be no more. This is because before the close of this year we are going to have close to 10 million gallons of potable water going to Sekondi – Takoradi. So in essence we have doubled the water supply from some 5 million to 10 million gallons of water a day. This is a working government”.

According to him the government has already exhibited a great sense of commitment to turning the fortunes of the country around.

He called for patience as Nana Addo and his team of appointees work to dig the country out of the mess left behind by the NDC.
