Wassa East Starch factory to kick start

Over 800 out growers in the Wassa East District of the Western region will directly be engaged in a cassava raw materials production to help feed a new starch factory to be constructed under the “one district, one factory” initiative in the area.

So far, over 6000 acres of land has been acquired by the assembly at Brofoyedur and Adaase enclave to enhance the cultivation of the afisiafi species of cassava by September this year to help feed the proposed factory.

This was unveiled when the DCE together with some major stake holders in the area paid a working visit to the project site in the area.

Speaking in an interview with Ghanadistricts.com, District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, Mr Wilson Arthur noted that the new starch factory is estimated to employ over 1500 youth across the district in various capacities such as out growers, factory workers, drivers, Securities technicians among others.

He disclosed that efforts are being put in place to provide an intensive training for youth in the area to be able to fill into various job positions when the factory is fully completed and handed over for use.

Meanwhile, some indigenes who spoke in an interview with Ghanadistricts.com, express hope in the government and appeal that the project begin on time to ensure its intended purpose.

One District, One Factory initiative 

It will be recalled that, President Akuffo Addo on Friday, August 25, 2017, launched his government's flagship “One District, One Factory” initiative at Ekumfi, in the Central Region.

A sod cutting ceremony was also performed to help pave way for the commencement of a pineapple factory in the area. The new pineapple factory is set to become the first factory to be established under the government’s new industrialization drive.
