The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the run up to the December 2016, promised to create six additional regions; two each out of the Northern and Brong Ahafo Regions, and one each out of the Western and Volta Regions from the existing ten (10) regions.

Government’s intention to create new regions from the existing ones, according to the President “was not to gain political advantage but rather help ensure even distribution of development and resources across the country”

President Akufo-Addo stated this Tuesday July 18, 2017, in his maiden encounter with journalists after assuming the presidency some six months ago.

He noted that the Ministry of Regional Reorganization and Development (MRRD) was working assiduously, under the skillful guidance of the Minister, to ensure proper supervision and meet the demands of all communities that will be affected under the new arrangement.

“The Ministry of Regional Reorganization and Development worked well, under the skillful guidance of the Minister, Hon. Dan Kwaku Botwe, aka, The General, to oversee the demands of all groups and communities that will be affected.

He added that: “I have initiated the formal process for the consideration of these petitions by seeking by letter, dated 26th June, 2017, the advice of the Council of State on them, in accordance with Article 5(2) of the Constitution”.

He thus noted that a commission of inquiry will soon be set up after positive consultations are concluded with all stakeholders, to inquire into the demands and make recommendations on all the factors involved in the creation of these new regions.

“The President is further required to act in accordance with the recommendations of the Commission, which will involve a Referendum being organized by the Electoral Commission in the affected areas to solicit the views of the affected people” he added.
