“We shall deliver on our promises despite financial challenges” - Bawumia

Vice President of the Republic, Alhaji Mahamadu Bawumia (Dr), has expressed confidence in the current NPP administration to deliver on its numerous promises, notwithstanding the current financial challenges that the country is being faced with.

The Vice President, who is also the Head of Government’s Economic Management Team said this in his closing remarks at a four-day orientation programme for newly appointed and confirmed Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in Accra, yesterday.

He said, although the NPP took over a cash trapped economy from the Mahama administration, the  Akuffo Addo government is poised to deliver on the promises it gave Ghanaians in the run-up to the December 2016 elections.

“All of you know the sort of mess that we inherited under the economic front, everywhere you go is debt after debt after debt and so dealing with that we haven’t been able to implement our agenda” the Veep said.

Mr. Bawumia however, assured by saying “we were not elected to give excuses, we were elected to deliver results, notwithstanding the difficulties, we are still going to deliver”.

He therefore tasked the new MMDCEs to be at the forefront of government businesses in their respective assemblies to help ensure that its various initiatives are fully realized.

Education

The Vice President also revealed that government has completed a pragmatic framework to ensure that “nurses and teachers allowances” which is a non-negotiable promise by the NPP is fully restored in September.

He said the restoration of the nurses and teachers’ allowance shall be rolled out alongside the free Senior High School (SHS) flagship initiative which is set to commence in the coming academic season.

“We all know that free SHS will start in September, that is also non-negotiable promise that we have made to the people and it will cut across the whole country. Every district, every family is going to benefit from this free SHS” he added.

2 billion dollar Chinese facility to support “one district, one factory”

The Chinese government has committed to support Ghana’s one-district, one factory policy with 2 billion dollar facility. The funds, according to him, shall be accessed by people who want set-up factories under the initiative which is geared towards industrializing the country to create wealth and employment.

He underscored the role of the various MMDCEs in playing an oversight responsibility over the establishment of these factories, taking into consideration the Akuffo Addo administration’s industrialization agenda.

China to construct 90 bridges

The Chinese government has promised to construct ninety bridges (90) under grant agreement to help connect communities that have been cut off by river bodies.

Additionally, China will also fund the construction and procurement of a Psychiatric hospital in Accra, Four Naval patrol boats and 500 police vehicles to boost security in the country.

Regional and District Hospitals  
 
He noted that government was still committed to boost facility in the health sector and as such 5 Regional and 25 district hospitals are expected to be constructed across to improve health delivery.

Sector Minister

On her part, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD), Hon. Hajia Alima Mahama, assured the Vice President of their readiness to deliver up to expectation to help improve livelihoods.

She said orientation programme has equipped the MMDCEs with lots of understanding into the local government structure and as a result there was no doubt that the participants shall exhibit high class performance in their course of duty.
