Atwima Mponua District observes Green Ghana Day

The Atwima Mponua District marked Green Ghana Day with a grand event that brought together dignitaries, clergy, politicians, security chiefs, NGOs, traditional authorities, and community members to participate in a nationwide tree-planting initiative.

The day is designated for planting trees across the country to replenish Ghana’s forests with various tree species.

Mr. Samuel K. Gyan, who represented the District Chief Executive, highlighted the government's significant financial commitment to restoring the forests. He urged everyone to plant at least ten trees in their localities, emphasizing the benefits of improved air quality and enhanced vegetation.

Nana Oti Boadua II, representing the Nyinahin Traditional Council, expressed strong support for the initiative and announced the council’s readiness to provide more virgin lands for tree planting, aiming to beautify and enrich the forested areas.

Mrs. Mercy Konadu, the Deputy Forest Manager, reiterated the critical importance of trees to human survival. She quoted the maxim, "If the last tree dies, the last person will also die," to underscore the urgency of the cause. Mrs. Konadu noted that the government plans to plant 340,000 trees this year, emphasizing that tree planting is a crucial strategy to combat climate change and its adverse effects on nature.

The event, which took place on June 7, recognized as Green Ghana Day, saw enthusiastic participation from various groups. A team from JICA and the CRADA Group, an NGO, the Deputy CEO of GIADEC, Akwasi Osei Agyei and, the 19-member committee also joined the exercise, expressing their delight in being part of this innovative environmental effort.

Overall, the event was marked by a strong sense of community and commitment to environmental conservation. The collective efforts of all participants highlight the importance of collaborative action in addressing ecological challenges and ensuring a sustainable future for Ghana’s forests.
