Mr Adam said policies on sanitation could only be effective if people changed and went œback to pick the culture of the past where women in particular carried baskets to do their shopping in the markets.
He said this could be replicated and urged traders to adopt the use of quality and recyclable bags for their wares.
The DCE lamented on the many black polythene bags that littered the environment and was particularly worried at how traders in the market swept and gathered rubbish leaving them at the centre of the market and in front of their wares without disposing them off.
The DCE was responding to an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Zebilla over the week end.
He said until all hands were put on deck to solve the problem, it would continue to pose health problems for both man and animals because
sanitation workers alone could not be left to tackle the sanitation problem.
He indicated that the Assembly spent the chunk of its internally generated fund (IGF) for the rehabilitation and maintenance of public
latrines and organized public education on sanitation.
He indicated that some landlords™ unwillingness to construct places of convenience for their tenants posed a serious problem and puts pressure on the existing facilities.
He called for support by all in the enforcement of sanitation laws and a political will to address the situation.
