NGO holds workshop to help combat teenage pregnancy

International Needs, a non-governmental Organization (NGO) whose sole aim is to mitigate teenage pregnancy among young women in Ghana, has held a one-day workshop in the North Dayi district to help educate, select and implement its Safe and Protective Environment for Adolescent Development (SPREAD) programme in various communities across the district.

In his keynote address, the North Dayi District Chief Executive (DCE), Kudjo Edmund Attah indicated that the assembly cannot solve the problem of teenage pregnancies without such collaborations, adding that the rate at which girls drop out of school because of teenage pregnancy was quite alarming.

He added that health workers, traditional leaders, Assembly members, and the assembly must get involved in eradicating the prevalent by psyching the minds of the entire citizenry. He said impregnating a 16 year old girl should be treated as criminal case and must be dealt with accordingly.


President Akufo-Addo, he said has done everything possible to introduce the free education and so did not expect teenagers to be dropping out of school due to early pregnancies.

The Afadzato South DCE, James E.Flolu also applauded the NGO for introducing the SPREAD program and urge them to continue with the good works they have started.


He was optimistic that the program would help solve what the government has been trying to solve over the years. He added that the government will do everything possible to support them in order to get to completely eliminate teenage pregnancy and also secure the future of these girls within the districts.

International needs are currently focusing on 3 Regions, 11 districts and 55 communities within the Central Region, Volta Region and Oti Regions.


Participants of the workshop from both Afadzato South and North Dayi District assembly helped in selecting and validating communities within the district which are in dire need of the SPREAD programme.

Communities that are currently benefiting from programme in the Afadzato South include, VeGolokwati, Leklebi Duga, TafiAbuifeVe Deme, VeDafor.

Also in North Dayi are Wademexe, Botoku, Aveme, VakpoDunyo, Wusuta with the standby communities being Trukpe and AwateAgame.
