AHANTA W: Youth urged to desist from early and unprotected sex

Ms Philomena Lamptey, of the Nana Hema Dekyi Hospital in Dixcove has called on the youth in the municipality to guard against the spate of early and unprotected sex.

This she noted has resulted in many teenage pregnancies recorded within the Municipality.

According to her, currently, the Municipality has recorded the highest number of teenage pregnancies, which put the future of many girls at risk of either becoming dropouts thereby perpetuating the cycle of illiteracy, poverty, and diseases among other social ills.

She called on youth groups under the National Youth Authority (NYA) to start a campaign to help reduce the spate of teenage pregnancies in the Municipality.

The Adolescent Reproductive Health Education Programme was initiated by the National Youth Authority office of the Municipality.

It was under the theme: "Engaging Youth with Policy Makers on the Preparation of district plan and Budget to capture sexual reproductive right need.

Ms. Lamptey also called on parents to seriously take up the challenge of educating their children on the dangers of unprotected and early sex.

She said lack of parental control, broken homes, peer pressure, greed by some children, and poverty continued to be the cause for the upsurge in early motherhood in some of the communities.

Mr. Anthony Baah, Acting Regional Director of the National Youth Authority said engaging the youth on reproductive health was critical for a quality human resource base for the country.

He said reproductive health information could help develop a positive attitude, values, and skills that young people needed now and in the future.

Mrs. Henrietta Mary Eyison, the Municipal Chief Executive, said the welfare of the youth was Paramount and called on all stakeholders to contribute in diverse ways in raising quality human resource for the municipality and the country in general.
