EJISU J: 45 year old teacher wins best farmer award

The 33rd Farmers’ day has been celebrated in the Ejisu Juaben municipality in the Donyina community under the theme “Planting for Food and Jobs”.

A 45 year old teacher and an entrepreneur from Deduako emerged the overall best farmer for the 2017 edition of the National Farmers’ Day held on 28th November 2017, as the national one is slated to take place in Ashanti.

Nana Yaw Amoako, a teacher at the Kristo Asafo SHS is also the CEO of Vic-Kate group of companies in Kumasi. For his price, he took home a tricycle, wheel barrow, knapsack sprayers and some fertilizers among others.

In a short statement, he said he started farming at a tender age and that it has helped him a lot in his career. He however pleaded with government to make most feeder roads especially those leading to plantations and market centers motorable, so that farm produce could be carted to market centers for sales.

The best farmer entreated government to create ready markets for the produce as a measure to get the youth into the farming business too.

Other farmers who won prizes were; best rice, vegetable, maize and plantain farmers. They all took home half pieces of cloth each including other souvenirs.

Delivering her speech on behalf of the president, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon Breatrice Serwaa Derkyi said the theme:“Planting for food and jobs” could not have been more appropriate as the president intended to use it as a tool to solve the unemployment issues and as well as solve the food insecurity problem in the country.

To achieve this, she said improve seeds have been supplied to farmers whiles the price of 50kg NPK fertilizer has been reduce from GH?115.00 to GH?57.00. Besides, services of extension officers have been made readily available to farmers, she stressed; and 3,327 bags of fertilizer already distributed to farmers.

Also 388 farmers made up of 352 males and 36 female have been carted under the planting for food and jobs.

These notwithstanding, she said government intends to build 1000 metric ton capacity warehouse in all the 216 districts to preserve surplus farm produce from going bad.

To this end, the Canadian government and the World Bank have pledged $125 million and $850 million respectively to the president to carry out programs and also to improve the financial status of the farmers and citizens in general, she disclosed.
