65-year old is best Farmer for Ejisu Municipal

National farmer’s day in Ghana is celebrated on the first Friday of December each year to recognize the socio- economic contributions of farmers and fishermen towards the growth of the country.

And as such, the day is meant to honour farmers and Ejisu municipal is not an exception. This year’s celebration was under the theme: “Planting for food and jobs consolidating food systems in Ghana”.

The celebration, which was held at Kwaso –Korase saw a 65-year old, Samuel Kusi Okyere from Essieninpong crowned as the overall best farmer for 2021.

He has 4 acres of plantain, 2 acres of maize, 3 acres of cassava, 53 acre of yam and 40 acres of cocoa.

Mr Kusi Okyere took home a tricycle, one table top fridge, ten wellington boots, a box of cutlass, a knapsack sprayer, ten boxes of weedicides, ten boxes of pesticides, a stand fan, some weedicides from Aspee ltd pharmaceuticals ,a certificate, and a wheelbarrow.

Nineteen others were given consolatory prizes.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Samuel Frimpong Oduro, in his address was appreciative of the hard work of farmers evident in the various farm produce displayed at the durbar ground.

He gave each a token as his widow’s mite to support them while urging them not to relent in their efforts in working hard to feed mother Ghana. The MCE also urged the youth to go into agriculture so as to sustain the industry.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Lawyer John Ampontuah Kumah, stated that he was pleased to see so much food stuffs on display at the venue, adding that, the situation shows that Ghana is food sufficient.

He stressed that this was due to the government’s planting for food and jobs programme; hence he encouraged the youth to venture into agriculture.

He however, disclosed that government was putting plans in place to construct the Kwaso to Kurase road.
