The road fund was set up in 1997 to aid in maintenance of our roads, including periodic routine rehabilitation of our roads. Unfortunately, some challenges inhibited the fund's ability to finance the needed routine maintenance and also carry out critical rehabilitation works leaving the country's road network in a rather sorry state.

However, this new Road maintenance trust fund is to help change the face of road maintenance by ensuring a dedicated fund aimed at securing sustainable financing for the maintenance and rehabilitation of roads, bridges, and other related road infrastructure across the country.

“Our roads nationwide are in a bad state; and maintenance has not been our priority, and you remember during the previous administration I used to raise the issue of maintenance because the maintenance regime was bad and poor and was neglected; so President Mahama has to make sure that we hold the bull by the horn and make sure our roads are in good shape".

He asserts that the country needs a sustained road maintenance program and maintenance structure that would put our roads in good shape".

According to him, whereas the 'Big Push' is for big infrastructure projects and in terms of roads for regional connectivity like trunk roads, and urban roads, bridges among others, the Road Maintenance Trust Fund provides funds for maintaining existing road infrastructure nationwide.

The fund sources he indicated would be from the road toll to be reintroduced soon, fuel levy, transit bills, vehicle licensing among others.
