TANO S: Stakeholders’ meet to promote HIV /AIDS education

The HIV/AIDS Committee of the Tano South Municipal Assembly has organized a programme to educate stakeholders on causes, effects and prevention of HIV/AIDS disease in the Municipality.

The programme which was held at the Assembly’s conference hall saw in attendance Hon. John Dadzie, the Presiding Member of the Assembly, Heads of Department, Nananom, Assembly Members and Representatives from the Civil Society Organizations.

The Hon. John Dadzie who spoke on behalf of the MCE for Tano South, Hon. Collin Offinam Takyi thanked all participants for honouring the invitation and stated that HIV/AIDS education campaign in the country started many years by successive governments, current government and other civil society organizations and ones the causes of the diseases are attributed to many factors, there is the need for all to get involved in the fight against the diseases.

He used the occasion to call on government to roll out a friendly programme which will help all manner of people to conduct HIV/AIDS test free of charge in the country to ensure the rate at which people get affected by the disease is reduced.

He said the introduction of the Anti-Retroviral drugs makes people living with HIV/AIDS live longer and encouraged participants to inform their family members and friends to visit health facilities voluntarily to conduct HIV/AIDS test to find their status.

Mr. Felix Baidoo, a facilitator of the programme said, HIV/AIDS surveillance system in Ghana is very relevant since it has help the country to acquire a four year national strategic plan for dealing or tackling HIV/AIDS issues across the length and breadth of the country. He took the participants through various topics including causes and effects of HIV/AIDS, Methods of preventing mother-to child transmission of HIV/AIDS, stigmatization and discriminating against people living with HIV/AIDS and HIV/AIDS counselling and testing.

Nana Awuah Boadi, the Bechem Nifahene who represented the Omanhene of Bechem Traditional Council, Nana Fosu Gyeabour Akoto II, said the programme will go a long way to help people understand HIV/AIDS issues and urged the committee to strive well to extent the HIV/AIDS education campaign to all communities within the Municipality to make other people also become abreast with the various activities that can make people acquire the diseases.

Nana said the Bechem Traditional Council is prepared to play a leading role to ensure the campaign is carried out effectively in the Municipality.
