Persons With Disabilities receive support

Asutifi North District Assembly through its Social Welfare Department has shared items worth Ninety-nine thousand, nine hundred and sixty-one Ghana Cedis (99,961.00) to some thirty-five Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the district on Tuesday September, 1.

The items which was funded through the Disability Common Fund (DCF) include thirty pieces of 300 litter-sized Deep freezers, thirty pieces of Fridge guards, thirty pieces of Ice chests, three pieces of mist blowers, fifteen boxes of weedicides, five boxes of machetes, a set of hair dressing tools, a tricycle and a set of carpentry tools.

The DCF which forms 2% of the District Assembly Common fund is a social protection program which was introduced in 2005 with the aim of minimizing poverty among all PWDs with particular focus on those outside the formal sector of employment, and enhances their social image through dignified labour.


District Chief Executive of the Assembly, Anthony Mensah stressed government’s commitment to ensuring the financial independence of people with disability.

‘’As a nation, we hold in high the responsibility to protect the vulnerable amongst us. That is why there is a percentage of common funds that seeks to address issues concerning people with disability”, Hon. Mensah explained.

The District Coordinating Director, Mr. Badu Baiden, advised beneficiaries to use the items wisely to gain profit and not selling or hiring them for money.


According to Mr. Duayah Peter, the district director for Social Welfare, beneficiaries were selected on first come first serve basis under urgency of application upon meetings held by the Disability Fund Management Committee.

“Items given to every beneficiary was proposed by themselves upon meeting the committee”, Mr Duayah added.

The beneficiaries thanked Government, Asutifi North District Assembly especially Social Welfare for their support and promised to use the items well for income.
