World Vision supports education delivery in Upper Denkyira West

The Area Programme (AP) Office of World Vision International in Ghana (WVI-Ghana) at Diaso in the Upper Denkyira West District, has set up reading camps for school children to enhance their education.

The move is aimed at improving the reading skills of pupils in the lower primary in poetry recitals, dancing music and rhymes at the camps, located in 17 communities out of the 23 in the Diaso WV-G operational area, designated as the Area Programme.

In line with this, the WVG under its Bicycle Education Empowerment Programme, handed over more than 70 free bicycles to facilitate the mobility of Volunteers selected to manage the camps, but had to commute long distances to and from the various communities within which the reading camps were located.

Mr Enoch Kwame Amu, the Education Project Officer of the AP, told the Ghana News Agency at an empowerment workshop for the volunteers at Jameso Nkwanta that it was also part of WVG’s bid to improve their reading habits.

The beneficiary communities include; Ampabena- Betenase( a twin community) ,Dankwakrom, Agona Port and Jameso- Nkwanta and the volunteers consisting of community members and teachers, were being trained in instructional methodology and reading skills.

Highlighting on the Bicycle Education Empowerment Programme, Mr. Andrew Ofosu-Dankyi, Education Technical Programme Manager of WVI-Ghana said it was a collaboration between WVI-Ghana, its Italian counterpart and the World Bicycle Relief in the United States of America (USA).

He said about 5,500 bicycles were distributed since last year with most of the donation going to school children.

Mr Ofosu-Dankyi said 3,000 of these bicycles went to school children in the Kassena-Nankana District in the Upper East Region, 1,820 were made available to pupils in the Nkwanta South District of the Volta Region and other districts such as Sekyere East, Asante-Akim North, Ahafo-Ano North.

He said the goal was to enhance mobility and accessibility of school children to and from school and was targeted at helping to address child labour by keeping children in the classrooms.

Mr. Ofosu-Dankyi said the bicycle supervisory committee had been set up to closely monitor the use of the bicycles to achieve the intended outcomes and urged the communities to use them for intended purposes.

Mr. Robert Kwamena Asomaning, the Director of the District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES), commended WVI-Ghana for the enormous support to education in the area and country at large.

He said the concurrent trainings of teachers especially those in the lower primary on functional and numerical literacy, establishment of reading camps, infrastructure development support and others were the regular positive interventions received from the AP since its inception in the District.

Nana Kwabena Amponsah, the Abusuapanin of the Jameso-Nkwanta traditional area commended WVI-Ghana and urged all stakeholders in the sector to help improve education in the Country, particularly in the rural communities.

In a related development, the WVI-G, has also inaugurated a GHC54, 000.00, six-month seater KVIP place of convenience for the Diaso Methodist Basic School.

The facility which comes with urinals, water harvesting systems and changing rooms for girls, is also disability- friendly.

The official handing over was held with discussions on the plans designed to ensure the sustainability of the facility.
