The support package was presented at a short ceremony at the Assembly’s premises.
Beneficiaries received a wide range of working tools and trading items, including deep freezers, sewing machines, welding and cocoa spraying machines, bales of used clothing, disposable takeaway packs, agrochemicals, and assorted foodstuffs such as maize, millet, rice, cooking oil, and smoked fish for resale.
The Assembly also settled school fees and medical bills for some applicants. Mr. Willian Kofi Adzowu, the Municipal Chief Executive, presenting the items, said the intervention formed part of government’s agenda to promote inclusion and economic empowerment of PWDs.
According to the MCE, the items distributed were informed by a needs assessment conducted by the Municipal Department of Social Welfare and Community Development after beneficiaries submitted formal requests.
He stressed that the selection process was transparent and guided strictly by national guidelines governing the utilisation of the Disability Common Fund.
Mr. Adzowu urged recipients to put the items to productive use to grow their businesses and improve their standard of living.
He assured applicants who were not captured in the current disbursement that they would be considered in subsequent releases of the fund.
The Disability Common Fund was established by the government of Ghana to provide financial and material assistance to PWDs, enabling them to actively participate in socio-economic development.
Madam Esther Ayamba, on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked the Obuasi East Municipal Assembly and the government for the support, pledging that recipients would make responsible use of the items to enhance their livelihoods and become more economically independent.
