This came to light when Metropolitan Chief Executive of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah paid a working visit to the site in the company of the Coordinating Director and some officials of AMA to inspect the progress of work.
The rehabilitation works which begun in May covering an area of 585 square meters is expected to accommodate over 200 traders.
According to the Mayor, all major concrete works on the project have been completed with the remaining minor works expected to be completed on time.
He said officials of the assembly were currently working closely with the leadership of the market on the reallocation of the sheds to traders adding that provisions were being made to ensure uniformity in the size of tables to be installed, and positioned for traders.
This he said was to forestall any misunderstanding and resistance between the market women and officials of the assembly before, during and after the commissioning of the project.
An architect with Works Department of the Assembly, Emmanuella Asante explained that all construction works had been done to meet laid down specifications as required by law since the market was a public place.
“For instance, the market women complained about the length of the wall, they wanted us to do something shorter contrary to the fire regulations but we refused. The required dimension to enable easy escape in case of any emergency is 1.2 to 1.5 meters, and that is exactly what we did,” she said.
