The survey conducted by the Information Services Unit of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) also found that most respondents believed the government had become more transparent in recent times, though some expressed concern about key economic challenges.
According to the survey, out of the 30 people interviewed, 20 said they were in support of the proposed unified VAT, citing its potential to boost revenue generation for essential projects such as road construction and national development.
Highlighting the importance of using the funds efficiently to avoid waste and mismanagement, four respondents opposed the VAT proposal, with six expressing indifference.
On the issue of governance, 24 respondents believed the government was more transparent compared to previous ones, citing measures such as the public declaration of assets by ministerial nominees during vetting, which was widely commended for promoting transparency and accountability.
Also, views on the government’s economic reforms were mixed, with several respondents noting improvements, such as relative peace and a reduction in the prices of some goods and services when compared to the previous year.
Most respondents interviewed also mentioned that landlords continued to charge high rents, and utility bills remained steep.
Touching on the overall outlook for Ghana’s economy over the next six months, respondents were cautiously optimistic. Eight said they were very positive, 12 described their outlook as positive, and 10 took a neutral stance.
Speaking on the findings, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, expressed satisfaction with the level of public support for the proposed unified VAT system, adding that the endorsement underscores the importance of citizen involvement in economic policy and governance.
“As Mayor of Accra, I am happy to see that people in the metropolis are not only aware of the government's proposals but also see the value in channeling funds towards critical infrastructure like roads and development projects,” he said.
Hon. Allotey also welcomed the positive feedback regarding government transparency and emphasised that the government was committed to deepening accountability at the city level and beyond.
“Transparency is a non-negotiable for the government leadership. The trust of the people is earned through openness and integrity, and I’m proud that we are making strides in that direction,” he said.
