Accra Mayor Allotey rallies AMA Staff to fight corruption, boost revenue

Mayor Allotey made the call on Monday during a meeting held at the Accra City Hall to engage civil servants on the national payroll as part of a series of staff interactions since assuming office.

In his address, Mayor Allotey urged staff not to shy away from highlighting the operational challenges facing the Assembly and assured them of his openness to dialogue and joint problem-solving.

“I have called you here to tell me your problems. This is the best time to voice out so we solve them together,” he said.

Mayor Allotey pledged to explore incentive schemes to motivate staff if the Assembly achieves revenue targets and reaffirmed his commitment to collaboration and transparency.

Touching on public perceptions of the AMA, he lamented widespread allegations of corruption and fraud, including the issuance of fake tickets and receipts.

“People say AMA officials give fake receipts. Let’s fix these things together. You know all the corners,” the Mayor told staff, urging them to propose workable reforms.

He announced the Assembly’s plan to address staff transportation challenges, disclosing that four official vehicles had already been repaired and others were being serviced.

On revenue mobilisation, Mayor Allotey revealed that a task force had been formed to oversee evening ticketing operations under the “red line” enforcement policy.

“We are piloting a 24-hour economy initiative. There will be night guards to protect ticket collectors and ensure revenue reaches AMA. This isn’t a nine-day wonder,” he stressed.

The Coordinating Director of AMA, Mr. Douglas N.K. Annoful, who introduced the Mayor, explained that the meeting was meant to formally present the new MCE to government-paid staff after earlier engagements with the Internally Generated Fund (IGF) staff.

“His hard work in the Okaikwei South constituency and private sector leadership led to this appointment,” Mr. Annoful stated, adding that the Mayor was eager to hear directly from staff on how the Assembly’s operations could be improved.
