The €3 million grant project which is funded by the European Union and implemented by the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly and Palermo in Italy aims to address the challenges of rapid urbanization, climate change and unemployment among others.

Speaking at a media briefing in Sekondi, Mr Issah mentioned that, the project which is in its second year also seeks to address the issues of United Nations’ Sustainable Goals 11 and 17 which focus on Sustainable Cities and Communities and Partnerships for Development.

According to him, the grant came at an opportune time as expected outcomes of the project were set based on the deliverables in the Assembly’s 2022-2025 Medium Term Development Plan; which is primarily aimed to build a prosperous society, create opportunities for all, safeguard the natural environment and ensure resilient built environment.

“I want to re-emphasize that STMA and its sister city, Palermo Municipality together with other partners were competitively selected among other applicants across the world for the European Union’s local authorities partnership for the sustainable city program which was launched in 2019.

The cogency of the STMA and its partner’s proposal is undoubtedly the € 3 million grant for the implementation of the Twin Cities in Sustainable Partnership Project in Sekondi -Takoradi and Parlemo in Italy.

The three-year project is targeted at addressing the issues of United Nations sustainable goals 11 and 17 which focus on sustainable cities and communities and partnerships for development respectively.

The overall objective of the project is to promote sustainable and integrated urban development in the cities of Sekondi- Takoradi and Parlemo.

The project is in its second year and we are certain that the set target for the project would be achieved.

We would continue to count on your support and that of other stakeholders including the media to ensure the successful implementation of the project for the benefit of the people in Sekondi-Takoradi,” The Mayor said.
