Akuapem North Assembly empowers PWDs

As part of his mandate, the Municipal Chief Executive for Akuapem North Municipal Assembly, Barima Awuah Sarpong Asiedu-Larbi has distributed various items to people living with disabilities in the municipality.

Speaking with Ghanadistricts.com, Mr. Awuah Sarpong explained that, this is part of the common fund distributed by the central government and before a person gets this benefit, he must register with the Social Welfare and Community Development Department in the Assembly, then his utmost need is taken and when the Common Fund released by the Central Government the SWCD will procure the items or arrange for the moneys and distribute them accordingly.

The items included containers, laptops, deep freezers, and cash for students, clutches, wheelchairs, disabled shoes etc.

This is the first one done in 2024 but will be repeated quarterly.

Mr Barima Asiedu encouraged them by saying that “disability is definitely not inability” and cited when he went to China, he saw a painter who had no hands at all but used his legs to do arts. He again cited Helen Keller who was deaf, dumb and blind and yet taught children, so no one is useless; therefore they shouldn’t look down on themselves and reduce their ability to begging by the roadside.

Mr. Asiedu, therefore informed them of the Government desire to get all of them fixed in the economy. He again told them of the disability Act which the government is enforcing to ensure their survival and wellbeing.
