He made the call after the Assembly’s recent failure to elect a new Presiding Member (PM) to preside its meetings.

Speaking on the Community Radio’s “Asem No Nie” show on Friday, the MCD noted that the absence of a substantive PM is having critical effect on Assembly businesses; hence the need for unity before the next election.

According to him, the Assembly has twice failed to elect a new Presiding Member although their presence in the Assembly cannot be underestimated.

Highlighting on the challenges that the Assembly is currently faced with, the MCD noted that, the assembly is yet to approve its annual action plan, fee fixing and other important documents that requires the consent of the general assembly through the presiding member.

The Assembly, he added, is now expected to elect a new PM without delay or risk losing on some of its key development plans that are earmarked for 2023.

“The failure of the assembly to elect a substantive Presiding Member has become a major setback for our daily operation, especially with the approval of our action plan, fee fixing among others to enable development in the area.”

“As we speak the Assembly has up to the end of September or October to elect a new PM or risk undertaking any development in 2023”, Mr Amadu Zure told Show host, Kofi Appiah Kubi.

Meanwhile, Article 244 (1) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana states that “The District Assembly shall have a Presiding Member who shall be elected by the assembly from among its members.”

Under this same law, the Presiding Member shall be elected by at least two-thirds majority of all the members of the Assembly and has tenure of two years and is eligible for re-election, presides over the meetings of the Assembly among other functions prescribed by law.
