The MCE said the growing abuse of substances among the youth poses a serious threat to public health, community safety and the future development of the municipality.

In response to the situation, the MCE, together with the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC), has led a series of security operations targeting drug dens and illegal makeshift structures allegedly operating as unlicensed drug outlets.

The crackdown has focused on areas including the Asawasi and Sabon Zongo enclaves, where authorities have identified locations believed to be associated with the sale and use of illicit substances.

The MCE stressed that the Assembly would not rely solely on enforcement measures to address the problem. As part of a broader approach, the Assembly has initiated community engagement programmes involving Zongo chiefs, Imams and youth leaders.

The engagements are aimed at strengthening community-led anti-drug advocacy and encouraging young people to stay away from substance abuse.

According to authorities, the misuse of substances such as tramadol, codeine-based mixtures and hard drugs can have severe consequences for the health and wellbeing of young people.

They further warned that substance abuse could contribute to increased crime and other social problems, while undermining the productivity and development prospects of the municipality.

Ben Abdallah Alhassan therefore called for stronger cooperation among traditional authorities, religious leaders, parents, security agencies and residents to confront the problem.

He emphasized that protecting the youth from substance abuse requires a collective effort, combining effective law enforcement with education, counselling, community engagement and opportunities that can positively engage young people.

The Assembly is expected to continue its collaboration with community leaders and security agencies as it works to rid the municipality of illicit drug activities and create a safer environment for residents.
