YAP creates jobs for unemployed youth in Dormaa Municipality

The government’s Youth in Afforestation Programme (YAP) has recruited 189 young persons in the Dormaa Central Municipality to help address deforestation in the area.

Mr Drissa Ouattara, Dormaa Central Municipal Chief Executive made the revelation at the Assembly’s Meet-the-Press event at Dormaa-Ahenkro in the Bono Region.

The programme, which highlighted major development activities of the Assembly since January 2017 when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was sworn into office to date, was attended by traditional rulers, both public and private sector workers and the general public.

Mr Ouattara said in 2018, a total of 168 hectares of deforested land were planted and 339.5 hectares of degraded land too was recovered in 2019.

In addition, 6,000 tree seedlings have been planted on the banks of rivers to provide protective cover for the rivers against the effects of environmental degradation while further 2,500 seedlings have been distributed to farmers for planting, he said.

The MCE stated within the period, the Assembly had been able to complete and gazette a number of by-laws to enforce its regulations, saying apart from maintaining an orderly society; the by-laws would be used to prosecute rates, fees and fine defaulters, thereby improving the revenue mobilisation drive of the Assembly.

Mr Ouattara reported that there was an upsurge of beneficiary schools under the School Feeding Programme as the number had increased from 15 in 2017 to 24 in 2019.

Touching on health, he said the Municipality’s proximity to the Ivory Coast had brought pressure on its health facilities due to many referral cases from border communities.

That notwithstanding, the MCE added that the Municipal Health Directorate had been working for efficient health care services delivery to the people.

On the provision of physical infrastructural facilities and social amenities, Mr Ouattara gave a catalog of them and cited the supply of 200 wooden dual desks to the Dormaas Junior High School and Krodaso Municipal Assembly Primary School.

He said Asuokor, Yawkrakrom, Akyem and Atensu communities had been provided with hand-pumped boreholes to give them potable water.

Others were three mechanised boreholes with the installation of overhead Rambo 1000 capacity tanks for the Dwaho, Nkyenkyekye and Tweapeasie communities as well as the renovation and furnishing of bungalows for the Municipal Coordinating Director and the local Circuit Court Judge.
