Ghana will soon descend to North Tongu to get sugar – DCE

The North Tongu District will soon become a major hub for supplying sugar to the country following efforts to establish a sugar factory in the district.

The District Chief Executive, Divine Fenu told Ghanadistricts.com in an interview that “very soon, Ghana would descend to North Tongu to get sugar”.

According to him, an Indian company has acquired 14, 000 hectors of land in the district for the cultivation of sugarcane to be followed by the establishment of a sugar factory.

He said details received from the company indicate that by April to March of next year, the factory would have been ready with the target of producing one thousand tons of sugar per day. Thus, it would be the biggest sugar factory in Ghana.

“It is one of the best things to have happened to us; hence we are lending all the necessary support to the investor to make it happen” the DCE assured.

He said the company which has started cultivating the sugarcane, only faced some land litigation issues which the Assembly brought in the Land Commission to resolve it.

More Investors Coming in
The DCE said the district is becoming an investment destination especially in the agriculture sector for investors who are trying to take advantage of the vast arable land for various cultivations particularly rice production.

Jospong Group, he said, has acquired land at Togorme for rice cultivation, with plans to also take over the Prairie Volta land to continue rice production.

Others are also into huge maize production for export and domestic use.He asserts that one of the areas the Assembly is focused on is the local content of these companies to ensure the indigenes are considered first for employment.

Additionally, the Assembly ensures their corporate social responsibilities are not neglected to the people; while the Assembly benefits from by way of business permits, rates among others to boost its revenue.
