The goods which included pharmaceutical products, alcoholic and non- alcoholic drinks, milo, milk, tin tomatoes and canned beef were destroyed in Kwabeng.
The District Environmental Health Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Bissi, during the exercise explained to the media that the goods were seized in December 2022, but had to wait for court order to embark on the destruction.
He said the expired goods were found on the shelve of major shops in communities, such as Kwabeng, Abomosu, Akrofufu and Akropong, when the unit carried out a routine check in the communities.
The District Coordinating Director Mr. Divine Seth Nuworbor, indicated to the media that the Assembly would not relent on its effort to protect and safeguard the health of the people, but would continue with the exercise until all such products are seized from the market.
He also called on the public to check the information on the products before purchasing or consuming to ensure their safety.
Some Assembly members who witnessed the exercise urged the Environmental Officer to continue with the good work without fear or favour and appealed to the unit to extend their routine checks to cover hawkers who sells unapproved medicines to the public.
They however entreated the unit to embark on public education on the importance of checking information on the products before purchasing or consuming.
The exercise was witnessed by officials from the police, health, education, assembly members and the media.
