Ajumako Enyan Esiam District descend on undisciplined teachers

Ajumako-Enyan-Asiam District Directorate of Education, has identified a high rate of indiscipline among some teachers as one of the main factors for the falling standards of education especially at the basic level.

Mr Philip Kwasi Nkoom, District Director of Education who said this added that teachers found to have engaged in acts of indiscipline would be made to write an undertaking, transferred or an embargo would be placed on their salaries.

The Director said this at a durbar of the chiefs, students and the people of Enyan Abaasa Traditional Area at Abaasa.

He attributed the low performance of students to the indiscipline of teachers in the form of alcoholism, poor performance, absenteeism, lack of community support, inadequate supervision and pupils unwillingness and the look-warm attitude of parents towards the education of their wards and children.

Mr Nkoom said the District Directorate of Education had taken stringent measures to check teachers' absenteeism and alcoholism in the area.

As part of the measures, he said, the Directorate has introduced effective performance monitoring of teachers to exhibit utmost professionalism, dedication and self-sacrifice in their teaching career.

Additionally, he said the Education Directorate will soon commence training programmes for teachers in accordance with the Ghana Education Service (GES) syllabus to reverse the trend.

He called on the traditional authorities and other stakeholders to support to the GES to scale up community education engagement programmes to give residents, especially, parents better understanding on the need to give priority attention to the education of their wards and children.

Mr Kwamina Duncan, the Central Regional Minister, who was also installed as the development Chief 'Nkosuohen' of Enyan Abaasa, promised to sink a borehole for Enyan Abaasa Technical Institute (Abatech) to improve water supply.

He tasked the district assembly to provide workshops and complete a six-unit classroom block to enhance academic work.

Osagyefo Kwame Akonu X, Omanahen of Enyan Abaada Traditional Area, also blamed the poor performance on high alcoholism among most teachers in the area that impaired their ability to teach well.

He called for increased support from all to improve the infrastructural facilities in the school including dormitories, library, classrooms, teachers bungalow, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre and Teaching and Learning Materials (TLM).
