37th farmer’s day celebrated at Kyekyewere

The Adansi North District celebrates 37th farmers day at Kyekyewere. The Adansihene, Opagyakotwere Bonsra Afriyie II entreated Ghanaians to eat more of locally produced foods to help improve the Agriculture sector and boost Ghana’s economy.

The Adansihene encouraged the government to extend the school feeding programme to all basic schools so that all children can get their share of the national cake. He further added that, locally produced foods should be procured under the school feeding programme to give the local farmer an additional market for their produce.

Opagyakotwere Bonsra Afriyie II added his voice to an earlier statement by the District Chief Executive, (DCE) Kusi Kwaku Eric that, the English language would no more be the medium of communication at Farmers Day celebrations in the District. The Adansihene expressed his disappointment in the constant use of the Queens language at local functions as he believes that, speakers are not able to communicate well to the people hence intended results are not achieved.

Speaking at the function, the DCE, Kusi Kwaku Eric announced that, a total number of 162,000 nursed palm fruit have been received from the Mineral Development Fund and have been distributed to farmers for sowing.

He further said that government has subsidized fertilizers for farmers to aid them have bumper yields and harvest of their produce.

The DCE also advised Ghanaians to take the Agriculture sector seriously because it offers a lot of opportunities and financial benefits that needs to be reaped. He however added that, achieving this totally requires the use of modern equipments and methods and urged famers to work in groups to facilitate a better co operative system for their development.

The District Agric Director, Mr. Eric Koranteng said the theme for the celebration ‘Planting for food and jobs consolidating food systems in Ghana’ seeks to providing employment to the youth.

Mr. Koranteng also advised farmers to be critical on the planting seasons as well as the types of crops they plant otherwise; their harvest will not reflect their labour. He assured farmers that, his office is opened for consultation on all agriculture related activities.

The District Agric. Director revealed that, the Akrokerri junction has been marked to operate a satellite market which will give farmers the opportunity to sell their produce directly to consumers.

48 year old Mr Kwadwo Afoakwa from Kusa and a proud owner of a 35 acres cocoa farm, 2 acres of cocoyam, 3 acres of cassava, 5 acres of plantain, 1 acre of yam including vegetables, was adjudged the Districts’ best farmer for the year 2021.
