Engage in oil palm farming- DCE

The Adansi North District Chief Executive(DCE), Kusi Kwaku Eric has urged the people of Adansi, especially the youth to engage more in oil palm farming rather than seeking employment in the Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) Mines.

The DCE made this plea at a ceremony organised by the AGA to distribute over 30,000 palm seedlings to farmers. The event which was dubbed "Cropp Climate Resilient Oil Palm Project" seeks to mitigate against climate vulnerability by planting more palm trees to reclaim lands that are destroyed by illegal mining activities.

He further implored people not to collect the palm seedlings for sale otherwise, the motive behind the project would not be realized. He encouraged Solidaridad who are partners with AGA in this project to continually monitor the activities of the farmers to ensure that, proper farming procedures are followed in order to result the harvesting of more palm fruits for supply to the Adansi Oil Mills for constant production.

Fomena Benkum Hene, Nana Berima Antwi Kwani II, who chaired the ceremony appealed to the youth to desist from indulging in illegal mining but rather engage in oil palm farming which is sustainable over many years. He further revealed that, the Adansihene has instructed that confiscated illegal mining sites have been earmarked for palm planting to reclaim the lands.

The Economic Development Superintendent of AGA, Mr. Daniel Arthur Bentum said, 2,000 hecters of land was dedicated to the growing of the seedlings and so, AGA and partners are optimistic that, the seedlings will not only help in the reclamation of lands but also provide jobs and source of income to farmers who benefit from the project and take the venture seriously.
