Akuapem North launches Green Ghana project

The Green Ghana Project initiated by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in conjunction with Forestry Commission was launched in a brief ceremony at the forecourt of Okuapehene’s palace.

Later the teaming crowd was led by the Forestry Officer Mrs Joyce Owusu Sekyere to H’Mt. Sinai SHS where the inaugural plantings were done.

Simultaneously, arrangements were put in place by the Municipal Assembly to have the programme in every nook and crannies of the Municipality in order not leave any community behind. Communities who launched the programme at their respective ends include Larteh, Mamfe, Mampong, Tutu, Adawso and Mangoase.

In Akropong, the Omanhene of Okuapemman, Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III was so delighted that a programme of such magnitude was organised. He thanked the organisers and called on the Assembly to stage similar programmes worthy of salvaging the environment and the lives of the people.


He said trees in themselves protect human beings and the environment alike. He was of the opinion that gone were those days where the vegetation was well protected, and where the people were deterred from indiscriminate burning of the vegetation and cutting down trees at will. He said in the olden days, the atmosphere was devoid of unwholesome substances which hamper breathing.

He entreated everybody to take good care of the trees they have planted at their respective homes, schools and locality. He said all and sundry needed to take the exercise serious so that the funds government has committed into the project would not go waste.

Delivering the key-note address, the Hon. Municipal Chief Executive of Akuapem North, Barima Awuah Sarpong Asiedu Larbi did not mince words when he said the Forest cover has been depleted over the years and if care is not taken, could seriously hamper the socio economic development of the country. He said in view of these the vegetation need to be protected, managed and sustained. He stressed that the Green Ghana Project is not a joke but a serious business seeking to create an enhanced national awareness to enrol every Tom, Dick and Harry towards the restoration of the vegetation and water bodies in the country.


The Chief Executive enumerated a number of benefits the environment stands to gain with unlimited trees in the vicinity. He mentioned that trees and plants are sources of livelihood for man and lower creatures and therefore should be well taken care of and multiplied. He entreated every individual to plant at least one out of the 5 million trees estimated to be planted nationwide. “When the last tree dies, the last man dies” He stated.

The Forestry Officer in Akuapem North Mrs Joyce Owusu-Sekyere, Dr. Bobi Barima Director of Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine also took turns to deliver brief statements.

Soon after the min-durbar, The Okuapehene, the Hon MCE, the Krontihemea of Akuapem Nana Oye II, the Chief Imam for Akropong Haruna Abdul and the Headmistress of H’Mount Sinai SHS Madam Mercy Amoah Darkoa were all given opportunity to a plant tree each to mark the occasion.
