Sissala East Municipal Assembly accounts to the people

The Sissala East Municipal Assembly in the Upper West region has opened up its books to the citizens for scrutiny under its maiden 'Meet the press' session.

The session was mainly for the assembly to account for their stewardship, articulating the implementation of government policies and programmes in the Municipality, which centred on matters related to education, health, security, roads, energy, water and sanitation.

The meeting also touched on government's flagship programmes, status of development projects and attainment of the assembly over the past years, highlighted challenges associated with the implementation of the assembly's mandate and elicited feedback from the people for the development of the Municipality.

Mr Karim Nanyua, the Sissala East Municipal Chief Executive said the assembly did not relent in its efforts and capacities in promoting quality, accessible and convenient education to people at all levels for relevant acquisition of knowledge and skills.

He said given the young people quality education was key to development and would help reduce poverty in the area.

He said, the assembly had completed the construction and furnishing of a six-unit classroom block with auxiliary faculties.

It has also constructed a mechanised borehole at Kulfuo, a three-unit bedroom teachers' quarters at Bechamboi and Bandei, a three-unit classroom block with auxiliary facilities and furniture at Kuroboi, Kowie, Chaallu, Kassana, Tarsor, among other communities.

On health, Mr Nanyua indicated that the general health indices of the municipality continued to show sustained improvement, which the assembly was poised to achieve government's vision of universal health coverage and a healthy population by improving the health status of people living in the municipality.

"The Municipality has made tremendous efforts in the implementation of the

Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound concept of which out of 52 demarcated CHPS zones, 46 were operational for the period under review", he added.

He revealed that over 80 per cent of the people in the municipality was being served by CHPS compounds.

On agriculture, he said the sector remained the anchor of the assembly's economy, employing about 95 per cent of the workforce, which had ensured food security and poverty reduction among smallholder farmers in the municipality.

He said the Sissala East Municipal Department of Agriculture in the period under review took delivery of 13 motorbikes and brand new Nissan Pick-up vehicles to enhance efficiency in agriculture extension.

He said under the current government, Sissala East had become the preferred place for agriculture investments.

Mr Amidu Issahaku Chinnia, the Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Karim Nanyua, Heads of departments, the media, Traditional Leaders among other personalities witnessed the event.
