Mrs Anafo, who was speaking at teachers’ appreciation and award day of the Talensi-Nabdam District, expressed regret over the spate of immoral behaviour by some teachers and called on them to stay away from such negative tendencies since it tarnished the reputation and integrity of the profession.

“We are not only expected to impart knowledge to our pupils and students but more importantly, to act as role models”, she said.

Mrs Anafo appealed to the District Directorate of Education and teachers of the District to work harder to maintain the good performance that was chalked by schools in the area especially that of the basic schools two years ago.

“The District in two years ago placed first in the BECE at the Regional level and placed fourth last year and this needs to be reversed,” she said.

Mrs Anafo said the Assembly had taken note of the despair and congestion in some basic schools and was concerned.

She said the Assembly had initiated plans to rehabilitate all dilapidated school structures in the District to provide new classroom blocks to decongest the overcrowded ones and under tree schools.

Mr. Francis Ayaba, the District Director of Education, said for some time now the Directorate had not held disciplinary committee sitting against teachers in the District and commended the teachers for their good behaviour.

He commended the Voluntary Service Oversee (VSO) for contributing 8,000 Ghana Cedis towards the procurements of items for the award of 40 teachers in the District.

He said since 2007 the District had not organized any teachers’ award day and appealed to the District Assembly to ensure that it take up that responsibility during the ensuing years to motivate teachers to give off their best.

He also acknowledged the contribution of NGOs including World Vision, Action Aid Ghana and Link Community Development for complimenting the efforts of the Education Director to deliver quality education.
