Five Communities to stop Child labour in Atwima Mponua

Winrock, a non governmental organization in collaboration with Kookopa and Kuapa Cocoa, two outstanding cocoa buying companies have arganized a 2-day workshop for opinion leaders, Assemblymembers, District Child Protection Committee (DCPC) and Community Child Protection Committees (CCPC) in 5 communities.

The 2 day training was aimed to fight the menace of child labor and trafficking which is much prevalent in agrarian communities.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Jerry John Rawlings, the field officer for Winrock educated them on the concept of child labor and the roles parents need to play to better the lives of their kids. He admonished them to attach importance to the upbringing of their wards for a brighter future and also to end poverty. He sounded the alarm that, the European Union has cautioned to sieze buying cocoa from countries that uses children to harvest cocoa.

Mr. Simon Padi of NCCE, who was part of the facilitation teams took the participants through childhood needs and their right bestowed on them by the 1992 Constitution.


Miss Divine Akpokpa of the Ghana Police Service also gave education on child trafficking and it’s consequences on the health of affected children and the penalties that comes with it.

In addition to the presentation, Miss Margaret Nambu of the education directorate also took them through the importance educating the girl child.

The participants asked questions and they undertook group assignments to appreciate and understand fully the matters at stake.

The 47 participants appreciated the work of the NGO and their development partners for elucidating to them the need to eradicate child labor in their communities.

The beneficiary communities are Debra Camp, Awesesu, Kyiribaa, Owusukrom and Afepaye
