For the third time running, assembly members in the Kwahu East District failed to endorse the President’s nominee for the positon of the District Chief Executive, Mr Samuel Asamoah.
In a fresh election conducted on Monday 12 August, 2013, Mr. Asamoah polled 16 votes with 16 against out of the 32 members present. The 16 votes were woefully inadequate to earn him the two-third majority required for his confirmation.
The way forward is therefore unknown for him as well as the assembly. Either he will be nominated again by the president or asked to serve as a caretaker DCE. The power lies in the hands of the president to decide.
For a man who was nicknamed “Adwumawura” in the local palace literalily meaning someone who likes working, the turn of event is surprising as many would have thought his confirmation would be one touch.
The dynamics of his outright rejection is therefore mind boggling and may be only the assembly members can tell. However, some have attributed it to deep rooted party politics especially between the two leading parties, the national Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
