The chiefs and people of Ningo in the Greater Accra Region have pledged support for the new international airport to be built in the town.

They have, therefore, promised to make available land for the project to kick-start.

The chiefs made this known on Monday, July 22, 2013 when President John Mahama’s Task Force on Priority Projects visited the 58,000-acre land in Ningo.

The land is currently being used as a training ground for the military.

There is a shortfall of 2,000 acres as best standards for international airport require 60,000 acres of land.

“We the chiefs of Ningo are willing to give the land and we can add the additional land for the project to take off,” said Nene Kanor Atiapa III, the President of the Great Ningo Traditional Area.

“There is a concept of aerotropolis which requires very large area for a lot of development,” said Colonel Walter Baturi (Rtd), a member of the Task Force that visited the project site.

“It is a military range but it is now going to be used for the new Accra International Airport.”

The idea of having an additional international airport was mooted after a cargo plane belonging to Nigeria’s Allied Air overshot the runway of the Kotoka International Airport, killing ten persons.

Another international airport is planned to be built in Tamale. in the Northern Region.
