Nana Kwaku Asante Nketiah, a 63-year-old educationist was on Monday elected as the Presiding Member of Sunyani West District Assembly by a popular acclamation.

By the close of nomination, Nana Nketiah was the sole candidate who had filed to contest the election.

However, Mr Kwadwo Agyenim Boateng, the immediate-past Presiding Member did not contest the election but by the assembly’s standing orders, the 55-member assembly had to vote to confirm the newly elected PM, who should obtain two-thirds of the valid votes cast.

Mr Nketiah obtained 38 out of the 55 valid votes cast in the election conducted and supervised by officials of the Electoral Commission (EC).

In his acceptance speech, Mr Nketiah thanked the assembly members for the confidence they had reposed in him and pledged to work in unity with all members for the development of the district.

He entreated the assembly members to allow national interest to override their partisan considerations for the betterment of their constituents.
