The Mpohor Wassa East District Assembly has improved upon its revenue collection by almost hundred percent in ten months.

From January to October this year, the assembly collected GHC1,269,929.80 out of a projected amount of GHC2,268,812.02 as against GHC1,089,442 collected in the same period last year.

Mr. Anthony Bassaw, District Chief Executive of Mpohor Wassa East made this known at the fourth Ordinary meeting of the third session of the Assembly at Daboase.

He expressed optimism that the assembly would exceed its target for the year when the rest of the revenue for November and December pour in and attributed the achievement to effective team work urging the staff and assemblymembers to continue with the zeal to make
more successes.

Mr. Bassaw indicated that the assembly would explore other sources of revenue generation saying that the few markets are the major sources of income earners which was narrow and meagre, therefore the communities would be sensitized on the need to pay levies
and fees to generate revenue for development.

On projects, the Chief Executive said the assembly had constructed a number of projects including boreholes, wells at selected communities, offices for the Assembly among others while work on a new market was at an advanced stage.

He stated that the District Tender Committee would soon open tenders for the construction of sanitary facilities, wells and the regravelling of roads in the various communities.

To ensure quality education of children in the district, Mr Bassaw announced that a team from the Cadbury Cocoa Project has provided 1,000 bicycles for distribution to pupils and teachers who trek about two to four kilometres daily to school.

"It is expected that the gesture would help them to be regular and punctual at school".

Mr. Kwabena Ennin Boahene, Presiding Member of the Assembly urged the 40 member house to work harder in order to benefit from the grants by the metropolitan, municipal and 0district assessment programme to undertake development programmes.

Mr Boahene deplored the poor attendance of Heads of Departments to assembly sessions and cautioned that in future, latecomers would be queried and their superiors in the region and Accra informed about their apathetic attitude.

Alhaji Yakubu Adam, Mpohor Wassa District Director of Education, briefed the house on the proposed Grants and Reporting Accountability Improve Literacy (GRAIL) being funded by the USAID and implemented by the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service.

He said GRAIL aimed at improving the learning skills of children from kindergarten to primary three and appealed to the assemblymembers to contribute effectively towards the success of the programme by educating the communities on the programme.
