MPOHOR/WASSA EAST: Nationwide education on domestic violence underway

Government has embarked on a nationwide awareness creation and sensitization programme on domestic violence and its Act, Mrs Jane Edna Philips, acting Western Regional Director of the Department of Women has said.

Government has embarked on a nationwide awareness creation and sensitization programme on domestic violence and its Act, Mrs Jane Edna Philips, acting Western Regional Director of the Department of Women has said.
   
Speaking at a public forum on domestic violence organized by theDepartment at Mpohor in the Western Region on Thursday, she said the xercise formed part of the National Policy and Plan of Action for the Domestic violence Act.
   
Mrs Philips said the Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs spearheading the exercise would soon come out with a national documentary on the Act for people especially in local communities.
   
She said the documentary would highlight the procedures, the frustrations, problems and challenges that people face in seeking justice on matters of domestic violence.
   
Mrs Philips said at times perpetrators of domestic violence and their relatives tend to harass victims and their families as well as officials of the sector Ministry, Department of Social Welfare and health care providers.
   
She said: "This undermines the effort of dealing with domestic violence in the country".
   
Mrs Nana Amua-Sekyi, Regional Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) said cases of domestic violence should be reported to the police and not settled at home.
   
She said many victims of domestic violence preferred settling matters at home on cultural grounds but this should not be the case as there was a law in place now.
