The death of six students of the Central University College (CUC) in a spate of five months has placed the students and staff of the university on a spiritual war path.

The latest deaths involved two students believed to be lovers who drowned in the sea at Prampram on Saturday, April 18,2009, the very day another female  student was buried, having died from a short illness.

In other instances , a male student was shot and killed by the police last December after being mistaken for an armed robber. Subsequent to that incident, another male student was reportedly killed by unidentified persons, and dumped in the sea at Prampram, while another  died in a motor accident during the Easter period.

The trend has also heightened panic and anxiety and elicited special prayers from students and staff of the university, some of whom are giving a supernatural interpretation to the pattern of deaths.

"I could not sleep the whole night (Wednesday night) when I heard of the tragic incidents,"Maame, a level 200 student, said.

Although some of the students discounted any notion of superstition, information gathered by the Daily Graphic at the Prampram campus of the university indicated that the students were engaged in a week-long spiritual battle last week.

At the main Campus at Mataheko, the Students Representative Council (SRC) organised "A mega blazing all night" last Friday to execute the spiritual warfare against the deaths among students.

A poster on the door of the SRC office at Mataheko inviting students to the all night service identified Prophet Seth Kotey as the main speaker of the spiritual warfare on the theme, " Operation fire for fire".

A member of the SRC executive , who pleaded anonymity said the all night service was part of the SRC’s programme every semester, pointing out that the initial fear that gripped students had given way to normal academic work.

The Prampram District  Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP)Christopher Quaicoe, confirmed the drowning of the two students at Prampram to the Daily Graphic.

He said the incident occured around 11am whene the two students, Emmanuela Addai, 18, and Baba Abilla, 24 , both from the  Mataheko campus and believed to be lovers, had gone on an excursion at the Prampram beach in the company of some other students.

ASP Quaicoe said in the course of the excursion, Emmanuela went swimming but was later found to be in danger immediately, Baba  went to her rescue but unfortunately, the two drowned.

He said  their bodies were sent to the Tema General hospital for preservation and post-mortem,adding that they were subsequently pronounced by the pathologist  as having died of Asphyxia due to drowning.

The bodies of the deceased have since been released to their respective families.
