President Akufo-Addo in 2017 imposed a ban on galamsey activities in the country. The move, according to the President was supposed to be a measure to streamline the small-scale mining sector.
However, a tour to some parts of the region uncovered that the Ankobra River which was gradually becoming clean after the enforcement of the ban, has again begun changing colour.
Mr Ismail Abdulai, an Assemblyman for Ellembelle, who spoke in an interview, said that the Ellembele District Assembly was not facing the issue of dealing with galamsey.
He pointed out that, despite all necessary efforts implemented by the ‘Operation Vanguard’ team to control illegal mining activities, the joint taskforce of police and army personnel were still struggling to deal with the galamsey menace in the Nzema East Municipality.
He further revealed that some illegal miners were caught recently and in defense what they said was, “we heard the President say, he is going to lift the ban so we think the ban had been lifted”, he said.
